My curve is 60 degrees, my doctor said I didnt need a brace. He said my curve was too big. I NEED surgery. May 13th. I just wake up every morning with the same thought, "It could be worse.". But it is true. It IS possible to have an 85 degree curve, even worse. I feel very lucky that my back will be straight and that my curve isnt 85 degrees. (: Look at my website, ScoliosisStory2009.piczo.com it tells my story (: and for anyone whos getting the surgery, I wish you the best of luck (:

A brace won't prevent the curve from getting worse. It will make the back muscles weak.Trt physical therapy that will help make the muscles stretch and get stronger. it's not a cure but learning stretches from a trained therapist is the best.

I am pretty sure I wore the boston, for 2 years. The worst part was school and summer. I haven't worn it for 5 years and I suffer from some back pain. My aunt had scoliosis and has had 3 surgeries since she was diagnosed. I am exploring the process of being diagnosed and being fitted for a brace for my senior art exhibition. If anyone wants to talk about how they felt about the exams or anything that bothered them that would help me out a lot. eddyx039@d.umn.edu

scoliosis yuk ! I hate it, i've never needed a brace im 35 and have a 24 degree lower curve. I was surprised it was only 24 degrees because i feel so crooked. I worry about the future ,and hope I can continue working and don't become disabled over this disorder.

I wear a Milwuakee brace right now for many reasons, mostly because I cannot have surgery and without it my spine (like rubber) twists and bends and I get paralyzed or bad head aches. Any other people out there who wear it want to chat email me at ladiciusk@aol.com

i wear something like a boston brace ,but a bit different. i should wear it 18-19 hours per day,but it's very hard to me to accept it. i had read the other comments and, generally, this days i am making google searching about scoliosis..and now i see how important it is to do this therapy...i don't even wear it 10 hours!and now i am afraid of surgery or something worst!!...i am going right now to put this awful thing on so i can get well...also i read that the more you wait for starting the therapy the less success you'll have...sorry for the bad english louzy-bsdl@hotmail.com :/ another girl worried about her spine..

I wore a Boston starting when I was 8 and wore it until high school. My lower curve stopped progressing just short of the need for surgery, they said at the time. 20 years later and my curve/rotation have worsened significantly. They say surgery is necessary now. I am so scared. I had hoped that it was all over, but now I am in my mid thirty's and I feel so old. I hurt everyday, and sometimes just getting off the couch is impossible without help. I hate it and am feeling like no one really knows what it is like unless they have been there too. Glad I found this site. It's nice to not feel alone anymore. pants101@hotmail.com if anyone is so inclined to write. I promise I am not always this whiney!

My daughter was diagnosed earlier this month.. she is 8. She goes Wednesday for her brace fitting... (for the Charleston) her curve is at about 17 degrees.. curving right. They monitored her for a year prior to this Diagnosis earlier this month. She curved 7 degrees this year alone. The Orthopedic decided since she is only 8 and curving rapidly as she grows that her prognosis would not be good without intervention now. She is very devestated and scared.. This is all new to us..

What I wore was not listed here...I had to wear a plaster cast with a wedge in it trying to restraighten the curve..still had to have a spinal fusion tho.Now it is all coming back to play catch up as my legs are slowly becoming mis-shapen...saw a podiatrist and he feels I should be wearing leg braces...so that is next I guess...

I'm currently wearing the SpineCor Brace as I have been for almost ten months now. Though it does look more comforting than the Boston Brace and the Milwaukee Brace, its still not perfect--it doesn't breath at ALL so its always like a sauna, and you can only take it off for four hours (opposed to the Boston Brace where I think you can take it off for eight hours). In the brace, my curve (and rotation) aren't getting any worse, which you have to understand, isn't nearly as bad (and if it gets better that's an added plus) but when I took it off for 24 hours it went from originally 30 degrees on top and 32 degrees on the bottom to 34 degrees on the top and 38 degrees on the bottom. I'm really annoyed because it seems like all this time that I've been wearing it have been for nothing, and if I have to wear a Boston Brace now instead, it's so much money gone down the drain and so much strain that could have been used for something that actually worked.

I've been wearing the SpineCor Brace for a year and a half. So far, I love it. It's confortable and well it's preventing my curve from getting worse. I have a 41 degree curve w/ crazy rotation.

I was the first participant to wear the Milwaukee/Boston Brace in the 70's. Yes, it was a mix of both types. Chin/Neck piece was WAY too high. We received the brace for free if I wore it for a year to try out. Ended up getting the Harrinton Rods in 1982

  18. Kathy said on Feb 20 2008, 10:38 AM:

I wore a Milwaukee brace for 2+ years back in the mid- 70's. One thing that concerns me about this now is the number of Xrays I had at that time, which were at least 10 every time I saw my Orthopedic Surgeon (every 1 to 3 months.) These were not low-exposure xrays like they have today. So I do worry about that. Also, my son was recently diagnosed with scoliosis and we will find out next month if they want him to start with a nightime treatment called the Providence Brace. Nice to have a website like this for Scoliosis patients and family members!

I wore a boston for four years. I had surgery this sept. My youngest sister is in a boston. One of my other sisters also wore a boston. My Mom and her sister, my aunt wore milwaukees back in the 60's and 70's.

My 10 year old daughter just started wearing the Boston Brace a few days ago. I didn't think her curves were bad enough to warrant the use of one but I was obviously wrong.
